I don’t think you have proof for that. It was healthier than shipping rotten or contaminated fresh produce to people, but it’s not healthier than fresh produce. Don’t just say anything to stick to your point

There was a time when fresh produce was cheaper than canned- (pre ww2). When it became cheaper to can foods due to increased industrialization, and therefore cheaper to buy them, people bought what they could afford. The market doesnt care about a healthy populace. A government should.

I was complaining about Turkey the other day and my brother reminded me that my (obviously Italian) grandma always made stuffed shells and manicott for tgiving. I was like I remember eating it but I did forgot which holiday that was 😂

I like to go on a tangent and argue that early solo MJ (rock with me) is still not as good as any and all Debarge . And that MJs greatness came from the whole genre fluid pop genius thing . But not those early hits

Over 20 yrs ago one of my high school teachers who explicitly identified as a democratic socialist (can you imagine k-12) teacher doing that w no repercussions today!?) told me he was a registered republican because he thought voting in that primary was more important. 😂

There’s this short story called Barbie by Gary Soto I used to read with my 5th graders. That and Mother and Daughter about a dyed dress for the dance. And we would talk about why the characters feel so much shame and anger about the bootleg Barbie/ dress. the kids had brilliant empathetic discussion

This is what bothers me. What kind of judgment could a person have without having a plan for their nazi tattoo **in advance**. don’t be a nazi but also don’t be an idiot! If I were running for municipal library board I’d still reexamine my social media and check my tattoos

It’s disingenuous. We call our dad’s cousins aunt too. They just wanted to put Mamdani,9/11 and hijab in a headline

I find it really telling (disturbing) that the students think it is somehow better that their pov just happens to mimic Nazi propaganda rather than it being intentional

Also, assuming the best, that this isn’t a deliberate misunderstanding, the initial comment is about how a protest that is not met with violence isn’t seen as threatening and therefore probably isn’t really effective. Nonviolent resistance isn’t what’s at question

This is just not an accurate representation of the Civil Rights movement. I don’t like to randomly argue online but this is just ahistorical-the Klan had infiltrated many police forces and had been terrorizing black Americans explicitly since the 30s but also before that for nearly 70years

Do you know any teachers 😂

There’s a fantastic Lucille Clifton quote “People wish to be poets more than they wish to write poetry, and that's a mistake. One should wish to celebrate more than one wishes to be celebrated.”
Anyway think you’re spot on and it’s a shame.

And more practically speaking, I teach them to take notes and self monitor. Let them know there’s no right way, but they want to be in charge of their brains and how note taking is a great tool for that whether it’s an outline keywords, etc. it’s a muscle that can be built up
October 4, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Also, I coach them in a very basic positive way. “You can do this etc” and I also in a crazy way like “these companies don’t want you to think for more than 90sec because then you’d realize your addicted to their product and stop generating revenue for them” 😂

I wouldn’t call myself expert, but a few things that have worked : setting a timer and requiring 10min. of quiet with nothing but the paper text and note taking tools in front of them. Then Id increase by 2 to 3 minutes every week until they can do 15/20

I read recently that a lot of the “test industrial complex” is promoting skimming over deep reading for K-12 students which seems related to both the lack of engagement and the attention deficit if you want to call it that
October 4, 2025 at 5:31 PM
I can’t say that that’s relevant to my experience. I worked hard to pick rich and engaging texts. For example, I remember teaching a great Jemison story to my New Orleans kids related to Katrina. Once I got the kids into it they were hooked, but getting them into it- excruciating.
