My preference? The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). It’s already widely used in academia, is designed to be international and language-agnostic, and is much more scalable than DDC: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univers...

We can TRY to fix the DDC but the changes it needs essentially require a full overhaul anyway. Libraries use Dewey because it’s what most libraries use and it’s convenient, but there are other classification systems out there that don’t have these issues to nearly the same degree.

Think about the impact that this has on library catalogs. Smaller categories naturally are less organized because there are fewer subclasses - this incentivizes libraries to keep these categories smaller. The DDC hurts representation where it matters most - our learning institutions.

Literature is (somehow) worse. 800’s.

800-810 is literature criticism / rhetoric
810-880’s is European literature
890-900 is all other world literature.

Same for language! 400’s.

400-429 is linguistics and philosophy
430-490 is European languages
490-500 is ALL other languages

Let’s take a look at one hundred-level category: the 200’s. The 200’s are for religion.

200-229 is general religious studies and philosophy
230-289 is topics related to Christianity
290-300 is ALL other world religions

First off, it’s very unusual under library classification systems to have such a small limit on number of categories. The DDC only goes from 0 - 1000, with the 100’s being major categories, with subcategories being divided up further from there in the 10’s, 1’s, and decimal points.

Yes, death of the author and everything. Dewey being a racist sexist antisemite has nothing to do with his classification system, right? Think again, the DDC also sucks ass!
December 10, 2025 at 11:44 PM
And I ran out of characters to mention the antisemitism! Seriously, find me ONE other librarian whose Wikipedia page has a dedicated “Controversies” section: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvil_...

First off, Melvil Dewey: NOTORIOUS piece of shit. Notably, he did fight for women to be included in library spaces, but then proceeded to harass every single female librarian he came across. Dewey was racist and sexist enough to be effectively forced out of the American Library Association…in 1906.

Terrorism. They were trying to terrorize people. They did violence because they wanted to and they find it fun.

And yes Trump is now just doing both things, but either case would have been bad for food security of vulnerable populations. I think it’s okay to decline to endorse a politician that doesn’t align with your morals, even if there’s a worse alternative.

tbf she said in that video that she would vote for Kamala, but just wasn’t endorsing. Which, while Kamala almost definitely wouldn’t have starved the poor *domestically* like Trump is now, she absolutely would have continued the Biden-era policies of starving the poor abroad in places like Gaza.
