Indonesia still has issues with armament procurement from Turkey. It's either related to availability of lender and insurer as well as Indonesian MoF caution to move forward with contracts already signed by MoD. MoF caution is related to Turkey's country risk, particularly on economics affairs.

Geopolitical risk seems ignored if Indonesia decide to purchase China's S26 submarine. S26 along with Type 052B is part of China's oppressive and intimidating marketing of weapon systems to Indonesia. So far Indonesia tends to appease China's offer with probability to accept Chinese offer is big.

Instead of overhaul, it's better for Indonesia to conduct upgrade and overhaul of its DSME 209/1400 in the coming years. Upgrade needed in order to fix the problem related to engineering and technical issues on that submarine. And it will be better if such program awarded to European-based shipyard.

Indonesia should uphold level playing field for all company which want to supply defense equipment to Indonesia, regardless of domestic or foreign firms. Weapon systems importation should be open to all players. Even foreign OEM should be allowed to import directly without local broker in Indonesia.

F-16 is the sunset fighter jet today. Its place slowly but surely replaced by 5th gen F-35, particularly in US allies. The order for the latest version of F-16 isn't impressive. Indonesia as F-16 operator should plan from today what is F-16 replacement in the next decades. 2030s isn't far away.
August 15, 2024 at 5:39 AM
In the next decades, Indonesia will be on the cusp of fighter jet option. We shall see whether Indonesia will be able to purchase US F-35 or not. The main F-35 issue has always been about politics, not about potential buyer's fiscal capacity. Should Indonesia forgo it current foreign policy?
