I saw A Serious Man for the first time tonight. I do not exaggerate when I say it felt like I was meant to see this only after living through all the shit that’s happened to me this year. Amazing movie.

My recent activity/last four movies watched, as shown on Letterboxd via four posters. The most recent movie is My Favorite Brunette, which has a poster featuring Bob Hope with a large mustache and a deerstalker, as well multiple depictions of Dorothy Lamour in various outfits including multiple dresses and a two-piece bathing suit. Hilariously, the two leads never look like this in the actual movie, which is a parody of film noirs. The second most recent movie is Bringing Up Baby, which has a poster depicting its two leads, Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant, above a more cartoon-ish depiction of them trying to feed a baby leopard seated in a human baby’s chair. Third most recent is the 2025 version of The Running Man, which has a primarily red poster that depicts the lead character played by Glen Powell running to the right, leaving a collage of various characters and images from the movie behind him. And finally the fourth most recent is Keeper, shown via a poster depicting Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland as a couple standing close together, both with evil marble-like eyes.

Predator: Badlands is a very fun time and one of the best buddy action blockbusters I’ve seen in a minute. The Predator franchise is on a roll!

Guillermo del Toro has made an all-timer with his version of Frankenstein. I loved it so much. Props to every human involved with making this beautiful movie.

All of the movies in this triple feature happen to have posters by one of my favorite artists, @danieldanger.net, made for each title. Coincidence? Yes, but it’s still nifty and gives me an excuse to share.

A new addition to the collection. If you’ve never seen Roxanne, I highly recommend it. A great loose adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, and one of Steve Martin’s best performances.
My hand holding up the soundtrack CD for the 1987 movie “Roxanne” starring Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah. The stars’ names and the movie title are towards the top of the cover, with Daryl Hannah looking out through the “O” as if it was a window. She is wearing a white robe and looks below the logo at Steve Martin, who wears a jacket over a white collared shirt, black pants, and is holding out his firefighter cap in one hand. He looks up at Daryl Hannah and we can see he has an unusually long nose. This is because “Roxanne” is a loose adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. In this version, it is then-modern-day 1987 and Cyrano is now fire chief C.D. Bales, played by Martin. Roxanne, played by Hannah, is now an astronomy PhD student who has moved to Bales’ town for the summer. It is a movie I was shown as a kid that I am still very fond of, so I naturally tracked down a copy of its gloriously synth and saxophone-centric soundtrack.

A more mixed bag this time, but Good Boy is amazing and folks should see it while it’s out!
My four most recently watched movies as logged on Letterboxd, represented by four posters. The most recent title is the short film Sweet Revenge, which is a Friday the 13th/Jason Voorhees story. Its poster is a black-and-white linocut-style illustration of Jason’s infamous hockey mask surrounded by branches, leaves, and apples. The second most recent title is Teen Wolf, represented by a poster showing Michael J. Fox wearing a letterman jacket and in the process of pulling it and his shirt back with his werewolf-hairy hands. The title is printed on his shirt. The third most recent title is Exorcist: The Beginning, represented by a poster showing a stone structure with a raised cross and the title on it as a single beam of light illuminates the cross from the upper left corner. The fourth most recent title is Good Boy, whose poster shows our lead dog, Indy, a retriever, surrounded by shadows of menacing hands reaching towards him. The title is displayed just below the shadows.

My four most recently-watched movies on Letterboxd. The newest title is One Battle After Another, represented by a poster featuring Leonardo DiCaprio’s face over a desert road and Chase Infiniti running while holding a gun. The second-newest is August in the Water, represented by a blue-tinted poster depicting a young woman swimming underwater. The third-newest is Sorcerer, with a poster depicting a large truck driving up a rope bridge in a rainstorm, tilting very dangerously towards the river below as a man sits in front of the truck attempting to direct the driver. The fourth-newest is Sisu: Road to Revenge, featuring a poster of an older man holding two machine guns and standing on a pile of wreckage including planes, barbed wire, missiles, a motorcycle, and a tank.

I have a tradition of hanging a different horror movie mask in my living room every year. Last year it was the ghost mask from the 2019 movie “Haunt”. This year it is the humanoid mask worn by the titular character of the 1925 “The Phantom of the Opera” over his true face.
A ghostly face (not Ghostface from “Scream”) is represented on a Halloween mask via wispy and slightly triangular shapes of mostly white with some yellow highlights. The mask hangs above a doorway. This mask is from the 2019 movie “Haunt”, a nasty little horror movie that’s set at a mysterious haunted maze where some bad stuff happens to our lead characters. An off-putting humanoid mask consisting of a pale face with thin painted eyebrows, a nose, and eyes with holes where the irises and some of the whites would be so that the wearer can see. There is a black fabric cap above the face and a white see-through curtain of fabric about three inches tall hanging over where the mouth would be. This is the mask worn over the deformed face of Lon Chaney’s version of The Phantom of the Opera, from the 1925 classic silent movie.
