Drop me a message if you are interested in what Coastguard Tautiaki Moana do as a largely volunteer organisation.

It’s incredibly rewarding and educational. (I’ve been mucking around in small boats for my entire life and have learnt a lot since I started volunteering 4 years ago)

As I’ve mentioned before the boat day is on my boat and for #kikorangi folks I’ll take 8 guests if you message me to discuss the sort of day you would like.

Get a group together and I’ll do my best to make it a memorable day on the Hauraki Gulf.

This is the video they got excited about.

1. Many think we are USCG and paid to do this.
2. The video makes it look worse than it was
3. 😂 At the time the video was shot I was at the helm of the boat we were assisting (following along behind) and didn't have the benefit of a windscreen or wipers - just spray in the face ...

Pretty much ... the logic at the time the article was written was "she's being lying undisturbed and we think the fuel has solidified so there's nothing to worry about - oh and we won't even try to check".

Rust never sleeps & there are reliable reports of bunker oil on the surface near her.

The 315 hp Yanmars in her are based on the Toyota Landcruiser 100 series 4.2l diesel which also have a solid rep.

Most Rayglass 4000s have Cummins motors and one particular model Cummins from that era has a less than average reputation.

Yep, Bravo 2 so relatively straightforward.

She has Yanmar engines and Mercruiser Bravo 2 legs - both of which have solid reputations (which was one of the reasons I bought her)

Yeah, lifted her out and water blasted the hull before she was moved to the hardstand. I will be down over the weekend to scrape off a few recalcitrant barnacles & a few spots that were covered by the travel lift slings

😂 usually I "split the sticks" and can pretty much put Manava wherever I want her on two engines (even when relatively windy) but that's a bit trickier & requires different planning & actions with just the prop on one side to work with.

gone completely.

This is sooo much cheaper and quicker to fix! Phew.

It also means my summer holiday plans can continue relatively unscathed!

Agreed. There are some good ones and some bad ones.
November 13, 2025 at 9:38 PM
😂 although yes, he was a friendly doofus that meant well ...
November 13, 2025 at 9:30 PM
Agreed. TBH it's the excusing of the shyte behaviour because they are small that annoys me. It's the owners approach that frustrates me.

My dog was developing some behaviours I didn't want so I figured out how to train those out of him. I didn''t go "oh he's a friendly doofus that means well".

😂 I did see the post on FB where your host was asking for info on where the dolphins were ... and then the aftermath of the dinghy incident (looked like you were near Motuihe Is. then)
November 13, 2025 at 9:23 PM
I used to have a medium / large dog (Golden Retriever). He was walked on lead except in specific off-leash areas and was well behaved (mostly - no dog is perfect). I feel like most dogs that started trouble with him were small dogs & their owners excused the dogs because they were small ...

I suspect that if we were looking at a Venn diagram of countries with some degree of universal healthcare and health related immigration restrictions it would be close to a circle.
