Scientists are testing whether Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) can be used to detect and monitor orca communications. DAS was previously successfully used to document the sounds of fin and blue whales, which communicate at lower frequencies than orcas.

We* may be biased, but the East River watershed is an amazing living laboratory for interdisciplinary distributed sensing. Researchers have come together from all over to collect water samples, do distributed temperature sensing studies, fly thermal IR drone surveys, and much, much more.
