Unless I misunderstand your question, I think whatever you consider to have gone wrong with regards to a second Trump electoral win is not connected to the protests during Trump's first term. Those protests were more or less successful for the time and for their purpose.

I would offer that, rather than lying, people's perception are driven more by their political ideology. However, it's important to note that maintaining one's own ignorance is a key element of conservatism. That is to say, they just don't care if their perceptions aren't congruent with reality.
