My office has become very big and breezy this week, with more cavorting fighter jets than usual. Spectacular #geology in the lake district. #fieldwork

The inaugural publication for the #geoscienceeducation thematic collection in Earth Science, Systems, and Society (#ES3) (a @geolsoc.bsky.social journal). Written by Natalie Bursztyn and team about ‘Using Immersive Virtual Reality to Measure Strike and Dip and Teach Geological Mapping Concepts’.

A nice transition from katophorite (brown) into ferro-eckermannite (blue) and then aegirine (green) in the interstitial space of a peralkaline syenite

A serpentinite mesh texture for #ThinsectionThursday. Or is it a piece of modern art? 🖌️
Note how there are several generations of serpentine, among them a clear one that filled the first fractures, and a dark one (full of magnetite) that replaced the rest of the olivine.

The isle of Rùm and its layered intrusion remain undefeated for thin sections. Foliated troctolite (ol+plag) or 'allivalite' from Hallival, in the NMS rock collection. #ThinSectionThursday

Glassy lava from Tongoa Island, Vaunatu, in plane polarised light. Clinopyroxene and plagioclase form glomerophyric clusters. These are surrounded by rounded vesicles (gas bubbles) frozen into the brown glass (liquid) when the lava was rapidly quenched #ThinSectionThursday 🧪⚒️

Tried a diff. approach w/ PPT slides this year. Rather than slide numbers, the slides transition from morning through to evening to indicate progression, with diff. animals throughout.

Gives the chance to sneak one easter egg into each lecture too.

A local #ThinSectionThursday today. Clinopyroxene- and olivine-phyric basalt from Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. Location given as St Anthony's Chapel, so probably lava two or three of the Arthur's Seat lava succession.

Aegirine in a peralkaline syenite from the Azores.

The darker patch in the middle (and the crystal above) is ferro-eckermannite or arfvedsonite, a Na-rich amphibole.

The surrounding grey crystals are a cumulus framework of alkali feldspar.

I used to do this somewhere else: a nice contact between coarse agpaitic syenite and finer grained metaluminous syenite.

The latter includes a mixed mineral assemblage with forsterite and diopside derived from mixing with hawaiitic magmas.
