This weekend I ran the Santa Rosa Marathon. My 8th. ... Completing a marathon has become an annual ritual for me -- a reminder that one does not needed to be the fastest runner. Put one foot in front of the other and, eventually: mission accomplished

IMPACT: An investigation I published last May has prompted the VA to add risk factors impacting women -- including military sexual trauma, pregnancy and ovarian cysts -- to an AI product that directs suicide prevention outreach

Rarely has a journalist been more prescient than @davidenrich.bsky.social , whose book, "Murder the Truth," published this month. This masterwork, on the years long effort to overturn Supreme Court precedent, weaponize our speech laws and silence dissent, comes at exactly the right time

I recently told the staff at @casbsstanford.bsky.social why I chose study #32 for my fellowship. It's where Edward Said wrote Orientalism in 1975. The book I am working on now is a passion project that's been in me for at least a decade, probably two.

In October 1977, Pres. Jimmy Carter signed the Community Reinvestment Act, which forced banks to confront the legacy of redlining. Without this law, banks would be under no obligation to make loans or place branches in poor neighborhoods, or support community development. Rest in peace.

I've just been looking at this letter that Jimmy Carter sent my eldest son, congratulating him on being born. ... We didn't request it, but I was a fellow at the Carter Center at the time. That was the kind of person he was. President Carter understood that these little things really mattered.

My thoughts in @poynterinstitute.bsky.social:

"If we don’t take the bait, if we focus on issues that matter and use the tools that journalism provides to surface information in the public interest, we can still hold powerful actors accountable and generate change."

On this, the 1st anniversary of Rosalynn Carter's death, I wanted to resurface this piece on the tremendous difference she made on my career and so many other journalists. She taught us that our work mattered and that we have a duty to pursue work that makes a difference. www.npr.org/2023/11/27/1...

I had the pleasure to present "Thrive: How to Stay Strong and Make a Difference in a Disrupted World" at Stanford this week. The engagement of my fellow CASBS thinkers from a range of disciplines was truly empowering and are already leading to new lines of inquiry and potential impact.
