I kinda wonder if it's more a feeling like Stalin in August 1939; cooperation with the fascist authoritarian is fine now, but the Russian leadership (in both the historic and present cases) know that dark, unstable things are afoot long term.

Yes. It's very sad that the Netherlands and Belgium held on too long with neutrality aims, ignoring plenty of intelligence, including covert German folks from the military leaking plans. If they had coordinated better with Great Britain and France earlier on, the results may have been less dire.

Gulp...the WW2 Denmark analogy does not give me much hope. 1940 was a very dark year, with too many easy victories/advancements for Hitler in April/May, particularly in Denmark.

The 360-h ECMWF is such a tease, but out of desperation for a change from this appalling state of affairs, here it is.

Essentially the same ethos intimated by Hitler in "Mein Kampf" and subsequently put into practice in his conquering of Europe. It is a sick and condemned ethos that history repeats over and over as future, historically illiterate generations forget the horrors of the past.

That's cool. There was a smokestack/steamer next door to the SSEC building back when I worked at UW-Madison that displayed similar behaviors on cold days. The heat/convection, aided by the very frigid temperatures of winter arctic outbreaks, seemed to be a key factor (stretching) as well.

Here in CO and other western states we may have less lethal heat indices to contend with, but increasing fires (and high PM2.5) and escalating water crises may still confer advantages to living an AC’d life in corn sweat hell.

Walsh’s statement closely resembles Hitler’s core ideology, if anything, as intimated in Mein Kampf and his actions years later.

I remarked to my wife, with a nervous chuckle, that the geese flying north this evening were headed to their summer homes.

Some (hypothetical) comfort that the white supremacists in the car did not know it was coming due to earlier DOGE cuts.
