🔥This is no news, but #soil #erosion after #wildfires matters and #mitigation works.
🌾 Straw mulch vs. no treatment after several storms in 1 month:
✅ Mulched (left): 4.65 kg sediment
❌ Untreated (right): 40 kg (≈10× more!)
Soil erosion mitigation must be among the priorities in post-fire management

🚀 The #EROSINK project is in full throttle!
This week, we (@imibasturias.bsky.social - @csic.es) have been out in the field installing the last set of plots to study post-fire #soil organic #carbon #erosion, working closely with our amazing colleagues at @mbgcsic.bsky.social Stay tuned for results!🔥

The integration of the Massman HMV in the First Order Fire Effects Model (FOFEM) with a user-friendly interface results in an easy-to-use and useful tool for managers to assess potential fire impacts on soils.
March 27, 2025 at 10:21 AM
We compared the soil temperature and moisture dynamics during wildland fires predicted by the Campbell and the improved Massman HMV models against field datasets from wildfires, prescribed fires, and pile burns. Results indicate that the Massman HMV improved soil heating and moisture predictions.

🔥🔥🔥New publication! Comparing modeled #soil temperature and moisture dynamics during #prescribed #fires, slash-pile #burns and #wildfires. I am very happy to see this research finally published, in which I collaborated since my stay at the US Forest Service RMRS.

Therefore, additional and more detailed field data from diverse fire-prone regions, are required for informing models and reduce the uncertainties in the estimations of C balances in burned areas at the global level.

The data presented here shows that post-fire soil erosion by water mobilizes a substantial amount of SOC, both in relative terms (per surface area) and absolute terms (total eroded amount). But, which is the potential for this erosion to act as a carbon sink mechanism?
February 20, 2025 at 10:21 AM
This modelling exercise shows that 2.5 million Mg of SOC were eroded during the first year after the European 2017 wildfires, highlighting the relevance of this process at continental scale, especially when compared against other land uses.
February 20, 2025 at 10:21 AM
To implement SOC erosion into that modelling, we derived a SOC ratio from the field study cases. The limited available data on post-fire SOC erosion only allowed calculating a SOC ratio with all vegetation types together, for high and moderate-low burn severity.
February 20, 2025 at 10:21 AM
To estimate the magnitude of this process at larger scales, we built on the post-fire soil erosion modelling of Vieira et al., 2023 for the 2017 European wildfires www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
February 20, 2025 at 10:21 AM
This assessment showed that on average, 5.4 Mg/ha were eroded during the first post-fire year, from which 0.6 Mg/ha were SOC, representing 12% of the total eroded sediments (an order of magnitude higher than in agricultural lands).
February 20, 2025 at 10:21 AM
To assess the magnitude of post-fire SOC erosion, we retrieved data from 31 study cases that monitored SOC erosion rates during the first year after wildfires or prescribed fires, and under natural rain conditions.
February 20, 2025 at 10:21 AM
To provide some new insights into these processes, we conducted a global assessment of data from field studies monitoring post-fire soil and SOC erosion, comparing its magnitude against other land uses, and modelling a post-fire SOC scenario at European scale.
February 20, 2025 at 10:21 AM
Post-fire soil organic carbon (SOC) erosion acts as a C sink when off-site burial and stabilization of C eroded after a fire, together with the on-site recovery of SOC content, exceed the C losses during its post-fire transport
