Back then, I watched a lot of his stuff on 35mm at the BFI. I was focused mainly on his fairy tale/fantasy work, but they didn't have many of his films at all as I recall. Terribly sad. He was the father of both special effects and fantasy cinema.

Wrote a chapter on Melies for my movie book. (Flicking through it right now...) At the time of his death he'd amassed over 500 shorts - less than 40% have survived. Melies destroyed many of them himself, the rest were either confiscated by the Nazis or melted down to make boot heels for the army. :(
