I agree with everything you've said. Also, the backlash Sam Smith faced for Unholy and their album Gloria was a huge indicator of we're currently at.

However, I do think a straight artist would've been able to recover from a J Christ a lot faster than Lil Nas. Once again, Eminem "Just Lose It" sucks but he's still around.

I'm skeptical how much his current failings are due to his queerness. Chappell Roan is on a generational run, and the MONTERO album spawned two gay hits: CMBYN and That's What I Want; both songs have a billion streams.

In hindsight, J Christ feels like a small mistake compared to the other bricks of 2024. Lil Nas X's "J Christ" is no different in quality from Eminem's "Just Lose It," except Em recovered from that while Nas has yet to recover from his mid-single.
