At the After Violence Project, we mourn the loss of Matthew Johnson and hold the fullness of his life, his complexity, and his humanity. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and children, and to the loved ones of the victim, Nancy Harris.

Mainstream media has reduced Matthew to a crime and a conviction. But criminalization robs people not only of their individual humanity—it harms their families and communities. Matthew was a father and was always remorseful for his actions. Like all people, he deserved the chance to heal.

They shared about teaching workshops on memory & personal archiving at Travis County Jail in Austin, & about building out consent processes for an exhibition & archival collection that emerged from these workshops. The conference took place at the University Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour.
