Step one, step two, my friend. We need both. And participation in democracy is not solely confined to dissent. Democracy requires many things from us, including love of community, understanding, pursuit of happiness and exchange of ideas. That’s what’s happening at the rallies.

I went to a rally years ago in Chicago, which inspired me to lead a canvassing group. In the group, I met a person with a fiancé deported by Trump, a person who couldn’t go to college because his dad went bankrupt from cancer & a person who couldn’t afford insulin. A kick-off to community building.
