Did you read the story?

“Officers say Locust, 51, sneaked into a shed near Avalos’ home and tried to use an electric outlet, but it didn’t work. He allegedly set a small fire to stay warm, but later explained to investigators that it got out of control and he fled to a nearby church…”

It feels as if the house of cards Multnomah County has built with its Joint Office of Homeless Services is about to topple, and it's not due to a lack of money, but rather a lack of steady leadership and a singular vision. The City of Portland, in contrast, seems united behind Mayor Wilson's plan.

Definitely one of the wildest political scandals in recent memory, right up there with Shemia Fagan. Fun fact, both Fagan and Fireside are Emerge Oregon alums.

It‘a feeling more and more like the “ICE facility protest“ and “national guard deployment” were shiny objects keeping the public and politicians distracted while ICE was out in communities arresting hundreds.

If the judge orders it, the Feds will be able to fund SNAP at 60% of the normal level in November using emergency funds. For example, if you typically received $200 per month, you would get $120 in November. It will also be delayed, arriving anywhere from the first to second week of the month.

It’s important to note, as the story mentions, a work permit will not prevent an immigration judge from issuing a deportation order.

“ICE also arrested a father at his home in Milwaukie despite his work visa...he was deported to Mexico on Friday.”

“No evidence of an accelerant or incendiary device was found, and at this time, there is no evidence to suggest the fire was specifically targeting Councilor Avalos,” Portland police said in a press release on Monday afternoon.
Investigators reverse course on fire at city councilor’s home, say it was not ‘targeting’ her
Investigators now say the fire actually began in a storage shed adjacent to Avalos’ townhouse in outer Southeast Portland.

"...their preliminary investigation found the fire did not start in Councilor Avalos’ car or other property belonging to her."

“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the fire was specifically targeting Councilor Avalos,” said PPB in a statement.

She overperformed in the 2022 election, only losing to Kotek by 4 points. Trump lost the state by an average of 15 points over the last two elections. There seems to be ~10% of voters unsatisfied with Republicans at the national level who will vote for them at the state level.

This will take a while.

"Lindquist has until Oct. 31 to send any additional information to the city to review before meeting with the permitting bureau next month. The bureau’s ruling can be appealed to the city hearings office. And that ruling could be appealed to Multnomah County Circuit Court."

TriMet’s loss of 1/3rd of their ridership exacerbates “feelings“ of unsafety, because the ratio of “normie” riders to unsheltered homeless riders has shifted post-pandemic. Homeless people have higher per capita levels of substance abuse, behavioral health issues, and criminality than other cohorts.
October 23, 2025 at 4:03 PM
I have a different theory: the “appearance” of safety declines with public exposure to unsheltered homeless people. The County’s August count says there are 7,444 unsheltered homeless people, many who are using TriMet daily for transportation. This also explains downtown ”feeling” unsafe.
