Got fed up with having to flash my full legal name at strangers on the bus every time I pulled my disability pass out, so I made myself a privacy screen.

Police mad that public library allows the public in without harassing them. Use fatal shooting that happened not even in the library to force them to stop providing public services. Insist on being paid by library to harass patrons instead of just doing their job.

Six days after the incident, the Portland Police Bureau sent out a list of “security and safety recommendations for the Central Library,” tying the crime to the place. Among them: consider returning security oversight to the Multnomah County sheriff; install metal detectors at the library entrance; require library users to obtain an annual membership; and disable the library’s exterior Wi-Fi signal, which “served a purpose during the COVID era” but now draws “individuals with no intent to use library services.” The library took some of the advice. It turned off Wi-Fi after hours and plans to remove some outdoor benches, which the Police Bureau said were used “almost exclusively for open fentanyl use and loitering.” Rather than turn security over to the sheriff (at the county’s expense), Moyer said in her July 25 letter that Portland police should respond more often and more quickly when they get calls from library staff. “It is unacceptable that their calls for assistance in dealing with people brandishing weapons or using drugs on city property surrounding the library go unanswered,” she wrote. Around the same time, the Police Bureau weighed in with a July 23 memo posted to its public records website, saying that stops by its officers in the area are up 218% from last year. This aimed to demonstrate the bureau’s increased intervention efforts. “It is clear that the root of the problem lies in a place-based environment that is permissive and inviting to illegal behavior,” the bureau wrote. “The current security posture at the Central Library lacks deterrence and accountability.”

Finally finished the window quilt for my patio door. I've never sewn something this big before. It has a heat-reflective inner layer, and the removable dowels create a gap between the layers because still air is supposedly the best insulator. The stars glow in the dark, but not very brightly.

Do lychees cobbler?

Verdict: Yes. It's kind of like a cherry cobbler actually.

(Fun fact: I used canned lychees and replaced the milk in this recipe with the canning juice. You can't even tell.)

June 2: First line share

My WIP doesn't have an actual first line yet ( . . . writing things in order . . . pfft . . . who does that), so here's the first line of the first scene I've written.
Carum grinned and pulled a dagger from his belt with his left hand, then gave the knife a short flip in the air so that he caught the flat between his fingertips. He tossed it again, higher this time, and when he caught the handle he started spinning it through his fingers so quickly that the light seemed to be dancing around his hand from the dagger’s reflections.

In case you didn't know, I am a queer #author of fantasy and science fiction. My novella, "The Company of Cats," is a sci-fi retelling of an old Italian fairy tale in which a young girl leaves her toxic family to work for a household of cats.
