John Morton Finney was a Buffalo soldier who fought in World War 1, earned 11 degrees and practiced law until he was 106 years old.

He was believed to be the longest practicing attorney in the United States. #BlackHistoryMonth

On this day in 1961, Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes, the first black students enrolled at the University of Georgia, were suspended.

This was after thousands of white people violently rioted. They were initially denied enrollment but a federal judge ordered their admission

Rector was already a millionaire by the time she had turned 18. She left Tuskegee with her entire family and moved to Kansas City, Missouri.

Given her wealth, the Oklahoma Legislature declared her to be a white person, so that she would be allowed to travel in first-class accommodations on the railroad, as befitted her position.

To help cover this expense, in February 1911, Joseph Rector leased Sarah's parcel to the Standard Oil Company. In 1913, the independent oil driller B.B. Jones drilled a well on the property which produced a "gusher" that began to bring in 2,500 barrels of oil a day.

Selma Burke was a sculptor & member of the Harlem Renaissance movement, best known for her bas-relief portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt

She never received credit for her portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt which was later featured on the US dime.
