The North Pacific "blob" of unusually warm waters is the blob to end all blobs, and will have some sort of an influence on the upcoming US winter weather. So too will La Niña, which NOAA officially declared today. www.cnn.com/2025/10/09/w...

La Niña is officially back per NOAA, and it is likely to persist through the winter. BUT it has competition for influencing the upcoming winter across the U.S.: The giant N. Pacific “Blob” of bathtub-like warm water. www.cnn.com/2025/10/09/w...

The Pacific "blob" is back, except this time it stretches across the entire North Pacific Ocean Basin. This is altering weather patterns, led to Japan's hottest summer on record, and could affect your winter weather too. Also hit hard is marine life. www.cnn.com/2025/09/19/c...

In a new letter, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash), ranking member on Senate Commerce Cmte, calls on Commerce Sec. Lutnick to exempt @NOAA & NWS employees involved in protecting public safety from probationary cuts & hiring freeze.

The @NOAA is in the process of updating its forecasts to reflect the Gulf of Mexico name change to Gulf of America. Hurricanes beyond the U.S. EEZ may be a bit more complex, though. www.axios.com/2025/02/13/n... [Screenshot of hurricanes.gov now]

Now that's a cold morning forecast by the NWS, for Monday Jan. 20 (MLK Jr. Day & Inauguration Day). Map of wind chills at 7 am via Pivotal Weather shows absolutely frigid conditions in the Plains and Midwest, with the cold seeping into other areas as well.

This seems totally normal. Nothing to see here. 2024 mean temperature departures from avg. in the Lower 48 states — it was the hottest year on record domestically.

And the NWS CPC temperature probability graphic headed into mid-January now looks even more gnarly than it did yesterday... (Trying side-by-side with new one on the *left*)

It's also been unusually hot there this year, along with much of the Lower 48 states, with the hottest fall on record in the continental U.S. (Biggest warm temperature anomalies in November, though, were east of the MS River). Here's temp anomalies for Jan thru Nov. YEESH. [3/3]

The early Dec. Santa Ana event is especially threatening because it has been so dry in SoCal recently. Here's November precipitation % of average, showing the dryness in the Southwest. [2/3]

Latest storm surge forecast provides some slight good news for Tampa Bay, with a record 8-to-12-feet of surge (down from 10-to-15 feet). But that's still historic there. Max surge would be south of the city, toward Charlotte Harbor, Siesta Key & Anna Maria Island.

Neat animation showing the cool water anomalies ready to upwell to the surface starting in the eastern tropical Pacific, as El Niño is poised to weaken & give way to La Niña. Via climate.gov.

NOAA issues a "La Niña Watch" as tropical Pacific shows signs of a quick transition out of the ongoing strong El Niño into its cool phase, with widespread, significant ramifications. www.axios.com/2024/02/08/w...

Extraordinarily dangerous storm hitt Calif., with:
* 70-90 mph winds from Central to SoCal
* Rare "High Risk" of excessive rains in LA County and nearby mountains Sun/Mon

2024 may be an even hotter year for our planet than this record-shattering year. BUT some key climate scientists are hedging their bets about that — hint: has to do with El Niño/La Niña strength and timing. www.axios.com/2023/12/28/c...

Climate extremes: Thursday set a record for the globe's hottest day, beating July 3,4,5, and extending the streak to 4 days. El Niño plus the time of year and human-driven climate change = this will be broken again. https://www.axios.com/2023/07/07/earth-four-hottest-days-thursday

Here's one of the most alarming maps from the climate reports out this week -- temperature departures from average in the N. Atlantic, where a "Beyond Extreme" marine heat wave is taking place.
