translational, and clinical research into the underlying mechanisms of, and possible therapeutic

The participants will hear a collection of talks by prominent Alzheimer's Disease scientists, combined with daily professional development sessions. In these sessions, participants will be trained in skills such as successful grant writing, finding their research niche, and academic mentorship.

The European Research Academy on Alzheimer’s Disease aims to provide an overview of the latest developments in the Alzheimer's Disease research field. The event is especially targeted at ambitious early career dementia scientists working in the Netherlands, France, Germany, or Switzerland.

Prof. Madry was able to identify the protein CLIC1 as a central switch in microglia cells. CLIC1 controls the mobility of microglia processes and regulates the release of pro-inflammatory messenger substances.

In his project, Prof. Willnow from the @mdc-berlin.bsky.social was able to show that neurons can use triglycerides to obtain energy when glucose is scarce. However, this only works in ApoE3 carriers, not in ApoE4 carriers. This important metabolic pathway is therefore blocked in people with ApoE4.

ApoE4 has long been considered a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. However, it was not yet clear why ApoE4 is a risk factor.
