Was once running a long-term 5e campaign where I eventually gave the barbarian proficiency in improvised weapons after opting to attack enemy combatants with, in order, their commander (after being set on fire), a door, and the party's druid who shape changed from a snake to a bear mid-flight.

I'm presently running a 5e campaign that has a group of first-timers starting off as level 0 teenagers in-game. In lieu of getting them into a precarious fight to explain combat mechanics, I had them play Hide & Seek instead. Loved by all, and zero risk to the characters.

Personal take, I think fans should continue to "keep taking it back." Don't spent a dime on legit merch, but creative commons and copyright infringe to their hearts' content!!
