That's not just bad writing. It's irresponsible. It's you, as the author, making excuse after excuse after excuse.

Give your characters fangs when it comes to a threat, or die in irrelevancy. Why should anyone listen to you when your views are so distorted, and contradictory?

"Let the opposing character get away by continuing to exist even when they are weighing everyone else down, and causing everyone else's lives to be hell for no reason, because they're my favorite/they're a god/they're hot"

If the opposing character has:

- Lied for no reason, and constantly changed narrative

- Committed crimes against humanity

- Tormented others around them

And YOUR response?

is causing them, and others, nothing but destruction-- Pain-- Or, grief-- And, the author doesn't want their characters taking more drastic actions because that would be ruining their marketable main characters' "virtuous"-- "innocent"-- Or "good" appearance.
