The "Redbirds" were a collection of nine types of similar-looking subway cars, with the R36 being the last remaining in service. Built by St. Louis Car Company, R36 cars first rolled out for the 1964 World’s Fair in #Queens. The Redbirds were a familiar sight to New Yorkers for nearly 40 years.

2. Also from 1986, this photo shows an R33ML train with 5 route indicators. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, graffiti inside and outside of train cars had reached critical mass.

3 and 4. Some of the R33ML subway cars preserved in the #NYTransitMuseum’s vintage fleet!

1. Taken in 1986, this photo shows a train of R33ML subway cars in “Green Hornet” livery on the 2 line. This paint color, officially called Kale Green, was tested by the Transit Authority on 12 R-33 cars on IRT lines.

Between 1972 and 1982, the R33ML cars became the first “A” division fleet retrofitted with air conditioning. When they were later rebuilt by the MTA’s 207th Street and Coney Island Overhaul Shops from 1986 to 1991, all cars were installed with General Electric Equipment.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1962, the first set of R33ML cars were placed in revenue service on the 1 line.

Built by the St. Louis Car Company, with an order placed for 540 cars, the R33s were the second-largest number of cars of this era, just behind the Brightliner order of 600 cars.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1948, R10 cars entered revenue service on the A line. Nicknamed the Thunderbirds because of their higher speed and acceleration capabilities, the R10s were the first modern car that the IND (Independent Subway System) purchased since it opened in 1932.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 2003, the last Redbird #NYCsubway cars were retired from revenue service.

Hundreds of people rode a final 11-car train of Redbird R36 cars on the IRT Flushing Line (7 train) from Grand Central to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in a bittersweet celebration.

Today I probably had the best stream yet. Over 10 views, more likes, new subscribers, and getting new donation members for the first time. It really warms my heart to see that type of support. Give it your all, ignore the negativity and never give up! :^)
