A servant faces him across the threshold, barring the way into the room behind. This woman is called Itoh, and she is an enemy. “My lady is resting,” she tells the medicine seller. “I will not allow her to be disturbed.” Well, not an enemy. An obstacle. The medicine seller tilts his head politely. “The townsfolk speak of your mistress with great concern. She hasn’t been seen in weeks, they say. Perhaps something I carry might remedy what afflicts her.” “Who said anything about an affliction?” Itoh says sharply. “You, girl—escort this peddler out immediately. We have no need of his wares.” The young serving girl who had met the medicine seller at the entrance of the estate and had shown him through its labyrinth of courtyards and corridors does not lift her eyes from the floor. “I thought he might be able to help us,” she whispers. “I had hoped—“
