Red peat mosses never get old... 😍

Had a fantastic day in the field with colleagues from practice and science, sharing experiences on #bog #restoration.

Fresh air, feet amongst living #Sphagnum, a flock (!) of eagles overhead: It doesn't get any better than this!

Shedding a light on #paludiculture: Enjoying the second day of #RRR2025, hearing about potentials, data, conflicts and solutions when implementing wet use of #peatlands. @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social

Do you also think that there is still too little research on methane exchange of alder trees? Here is one new little puzzle piece from our lab:

What a huge scale! Last week we walked >16 km across a drained peat grassland to select study plots at our #wetscapes2.0 landscape-level experiment on peatland #rewetting. Soon sneakers won't be a suitable any more, and frogs don't have to rely on drainage ditches to thrive!

So it has begun!
What looks like an inconspicuous box of boxes actually is the start of our planned sensor network for environmental conditions in rewetted fens.

Winter is for finishing, recalibrating and community. Today we combined it all and cleaned up our longest running field site, which looks like a lake but is actually a #peatland, in a joined effort by Universities of Rostock and Greifswald. Wishing you all a joyful end of the year!

Maybe humans? Here in northern Germany some #peatlands were covered with sand or other debris, in order to "improve" properties for cultivation. The profile in the picture contained a middle layer of, among other things, brick fragments.

New year, new field site: Had a cold but beautiful day searching for peat mosses under snow and generally scouting the location for our new bog restoration project.

To the unknown campus squirrel trying to tinker with our demonstration bog-in-a-box by burying foreign macro-remains: Not this time, my friend.
