The men who wrote the US Constitution agreed. They did NOT want a democracy. I think it was Alexander Hamilton who wrote that if the majority made the rules they would confiscate the property of the wealthy.

For the long term: propose a Constitutional Amendment abolishing the office of President. No one person should have that kind of power. Replace with a group of separately directly elected Cabinet Officers. (See Switzerland) If Trump can be elected, our Constitution is broken.
