I'm bummed that it took 35 years to learn that adding some Iron Eagle action to Top Gun = cinema magic

I get the engineer arg 'I don't want to be dependent on another vendor...'

I just don't know if that is and less risky than taking 100% ownership of your tech stack.

ID the vendors that are here to stay. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good because there are no perfect vendors in insurance.

Here’s an example (and maybe I’m wrong…)

Name an insurer that can prove the cost and maintenance of building their own policy system was a better decision on the balance sheet.

Not a defense or endorsement of PAS vendors, but I’ve never known a customer who ‘said, yeah, I’m glad we build a PAS’

If your core business is being an insurer, challenge your self to use the best tools available.

Adapt to use the tools. Nothing will be a perfect fit.

Do that exercise 10x before you get convinced to build technology.

Every insurer thinks their products are special and unique. Even if this is true, I think it’s a huge trap to think you need to invent technology.

Building is not trivial.

It’s long been said that tech companies underestimate the complexities of insurance.

It is also true that the complexities of tech and product tech design are also underestimated.
