Where does that leave us? I’m not sure but after fighting for better schools in Kentucky for over a decade I know one thing: when institutions falter, people with courage must fight back.

I hope our state department of education or our storied statewide education nonprofits fill the void and stand up for marginalized communities as they have in the past—but Trump just threatened their federal funding so again, I’m not holding my breath.

I hope philanthropy recognizes the urgency of this moment and responds accordingly—but again, I’m not holding my breath.

our founders were clear when they wrote our state constitution: the responsibility for ensuring every student has access to a quality public education falls to the state legislature.

so if the system is “broken” the legislature broke it. since they refuse to fix it, we’ll see them in court.
