Non-binary political scientist studying the censorship of queer stories and LGBTQ educational activism. Bossed around by five cats. Blog intermittently at https://adventuresincensorship.com/
On the one hand I’m excited to get cool new queer history for both my work and teaching. On the other hand I have to find the time and energy to read it.

I was so excited by this post that I got multiple copies. Or something got messed up in my order. Still looking forward to it.

Talk about a finding aid line meant to entice me:

Time to work on my music censorship lecture and that means revisiting one of my favorite 1980s censorship books. I always wonder if Tippers daughter ever throws on Prince today just to see her mom’s reaction.

Trying to actual finish my guest lecture for tomorrow because I'm a responsible guest and I am well-prepared and love this image from the Mapplethorpe obscenity trial fight in Cincinnati.

Trying to prep an art history lecture so I don’t look like too much of a bumbling idiot and finally found one of my copies of Hartmans wonderful history of the culture wars. I kinda want to do a seminar on the topic but who knows if interdisciplinary teaching is even allowed anymore? Is it efficient

Don’t know how I missed this book, I’ll blame Covid. Now if I can just actually focus on it.

Sometimes I forget how truly evil the American Family Association was.

A lovely friend asked me six months ago to guest lecture in her class - the first and likely last time - on 1990s culture war stuff so I'm finally getting to looking for material. I give you a list of examples of unholy TV circulated calling for a boycott of advertisers who support smutty TV.

I highly recommend having a fluffy belly next to you while grading. The belly rubs don’t make the grading quicker but it eases the annoyance.

Yay! New publication is up. This is my first substantive output from my queer educational activism side gig. This explores three instances of straight backlash on 1990s college campuses as a means of digging into the idea of backlash and inclusion a bit more.

Prepping a censorship rebellion meeting talk on the death of academic freedom and this quote about the U of Washington in 1947 never ceases to amuse me. It could literally be the quote of any conservative critic of higher ed for the last 80 years.

Sometimes I think I'm not a serious political scientist. And then I work on this lecture and realize I don't really care one way or another.

Finally decided to fill in the back of my forearm with the book theme continuing.

Communists on campus are ok, but gay people, come on!

Reason not to recognize a gay student group in 1973 Missouri. I kind want someone to try this as a pickup line, "hey I'm latent, want to make me an overt homosexual?"

Lego Richard and I decided to go on an outting for SLC beer while consuming classic 1970s homophobia. Rode down with cosplayers heading to comic con which was fun and made me miss going.

Working on notes about a 1970s gay student group recognition and here is how they expanded one purpose. I giggled because for some reason I see this as a Star Trek TNG episode. "Captain Picard, a sexual entity is approaching at Warp 2!"

The dangerous group in question!

Getting testimony for the obscenity of Vixen (1968) for my upcoming week on sexplotation films and this is hands down one of my favorite bits of testimony. The film is obscene because it shows women enjoying sex and orgasming. Normal women rarely orgasm and thus it gives viewers a false expectation.

Teddy plays hard on weekends.

Love lecturing on comics for many reasons but partly because it is just fun to throw up covers and images

Teaching a bit about Winters v. NY (1948) today, an under appreciated case in free speech law. So happy that I randomly found the issue of Headquarters Detective magazine involved in the case in an archive. Such scandalous stuff.

Working on files around obscenity prosecutions of Russ Meyer's sexploitation film Vixen (1968) and this expert opinion from a psychologist on why the film is patently offensive is fun. Going to give this to students in a few weeks.

Teddy joins me for some work but says he is now first author.
