I focus on wheat in Hispaniola because I'm interested in particular in the institutional and ‘scientific’ processes put in place to organize the first transatlantic agricultural experiments. All this is described in this article and in my PhD (to be defended on October 17th this year in Paris!).

... I argue that 16-th century Spaniards preferred to cultivate the plants they knew, those of their daily consumptions in Spain. This interest shows that they had a very particular conception of the colonization and settlement of the Americas.

J'explore tout ça dans ma thèse, où je décris les "plantes de Castille", la catégorie utilisée par les Espagnols pour décrire tout ce qu'ils ont amené et planté aux Amériques. J'en parlerai peut-être à l'occasion puisqu'en ce moment tout est en plein boom ici ☺️

Le contrat inclut aussi cressons, navets, melons et concombres. Ça fait AMAP sympa mais ce sont en réalité les premiers pas de l'appropriation espagnole du foncier de la lagune de Mexico. La colonisation n'est pas passée que par l'exploitation minière ou les plantations.
