Here's 10 I should read before turning into a pumpkin

...The universe heard me. I guess I'm definitely writing about it then

I was much more restrained than Womble, he wasn't doing a good booktempting job clearly

Happy Halloween! If you're at World Fantasy Con, I, a beautiful pastel unicorn, am also at World Fantasy Con. What spookier thing could there be at a goth heavy event after all?

Experiencing the Hugos over aeroplane wifi. Good luck to the Good Shit!

Here's Gothenburg, Sweden, scoring very high on the "best bookshops while travelling" list because not only do they have a dedicated SFF bookshop, but the first thing that caught my eye facing out was @brentclambert.bsky.social's A NECESSARY CHAOS from @neonhemlock.bsky.social! An excellent choice!

This is the best video game self portrait I've made since Wii Fit ❤️ and this time it's not even trying to shame me into doing a plank!

I hit a critic milestone! CSE Cooney's SAINT DEATH'S HERALD arrived today (in fetching yellow!) and it unexpectedly has MY PRAISE on it!

I have great taste so this is really all the information you need to pick this series up, it's brilliant.

Pity this animal, whose very poopy bumhole has just been given a warm, gentle but persistent shower...

A deeply unserious animal

Zag is determined not to let age and reduced mobility stop her from destroying my sofa with her stupid decisions. I love this horrible creature so much...
April 12, 2025 at 4:39 PM
Zag isn't doing very well, health wise, and I may have to make a hard decision soon 💔. Please think comfortable thoughts for this ancient wobbly whippet.

Ok so what's the deal with THE SUNFORGE being so GOOD and so UFFFFH and so ICKY and so full of assholes who should not be gods and sad queers who should just be given a break instead of *gestures madly* oh my poor little ducklings

A #transrightsreadathon TBR? Yeah, sure, I can do one of those.

Stack 1, FALTAS to SUNFORGE, I hope to read in the duration of the readathon. Stack 2, THE SPIRIT BARES ITS TEETH to MEANWHILE, ELSEWHERE, I doubt I'll get to but will read... Soon. Soon.

13. AMMONITE by Nicola Griffith. I'd be nervous to reread this in case it doesn't stand up but it absolutely blew me away when I started down the rabbithole of feminist SF and it switched me on to the brilliance that is Nicola Griffith.

12. THE EYRE AFFAIR by Jasper Fforde: when I was in sixth form I was convinced I only wanted to read "smart" literary classics (and Brett Easton Ellis?!). Then I moved to a small city in China, my Mum sent me this book in a care package and it cured me of my miserable, pretentious delusions. Lucky!

11. Rowan of Rin is a series about a purehearted dweeb who always gets to be the Special-est boy of his village. Not a recommendation, but ROWAN AND THE KEEPER OF THE CRYSTAL has a place in my heart because it's the first book I remember writing fanfic about (a pokemon crossover, lost to time)

10. Let's do a couple of childhood favourites (in which I reveal my well-hidden Australian childhood): the Obernewtyn chronicles by Isobelle Carmody was exactly the kind of weird Not Like Other Girls shit I wanted as a tween and I think THE FARSEEKERS is the best one. Never did finish the series...

9. CREATURES: THE LEGACY OF FRANKENSTEIN ed. David Thomas Moore. I found myself randomly thinking about this book for the first time in aaages at a Fantasycon panel (and recced it!) and it was one of the first books I reviewed on NoaF: a great quintet of stories, worth tracking down!

8. TESS OF THE ROAD by Rachel Hartman. Like many people, the older I get the less most YA novels do for me, but I hope I never outgrow this kind of gentle-kick-in-the-ass bildungsroman. One foot in front of the other.

Continuing!
7. THE SIEGE OF BURNING GRASS by Premee Mohamed. This has got such a timelessly brilliant fantasy vibe to it, and it features a good (if often bleak) portrayal of individual agency in the face of systemic atrocity. The cover confuses me but can't go wrong with a birb i guess
