If you listen, this is very unmistakably Donizetti’s compositional style. Teetering and floating on the verge of dissonance in the loveliest way and resolving so exquisitely. Masterfully interpreted by Pavarotti here. Give it a listen, it will give you frisson. 🥰

Yet, even after getting the confirmation from the poet himself, people are still intent on taking credit away from Donizetti for writing this piece, and continue to insist on crediting this piece as “anonymous”. Am I missing something here?

In a very thorough biography about Donizetti that was written in the 1960’s by Herbert Weinstock, he actually talks about how the poet who wrote the text that this lovely art song is based on CONFIRMED that Donizetti was the one who set it to music.
