...but then I remembered DJ Yoda's How To Cut And Paste Mix Tape Vol 1 (2001) and now i'm listening to that instead

Just looked and it's not yet on the master list, but at this point who would even know if it could be 🤷‍♂️

I was about to go & listen to this to see what the fuss is about, then started wondering what else might disqualify a release, then thought about compilation albums, but obviously those aren't a recording artist's album in any real sense, but... 1/

My credentials: don't think I'd ever heard of Wilco till all this kicked off; am a part-time pedant.
I go back to first principles: this is about finding the best album of 2001.
Sod all the release date arguments, the zeitgeist & culture wherein it was composed and finished was that of a 2001 album.

So I agree he didn't kill her and that Bobby's broadly blessed future goes on.
Here's a possible parallel: now Steven has taken himself out of the picture because he hates his evil side & addictions, his ex won't be pulled along by his charisma; maybe she'll turn around & find a great future.

First time round, my reading of his last scene was that Becky has finally left him; he's devastated & blaming himself & how he wrecked his potential. Gersten is trying to talk him down and say no, it was Becky. I've never really understood where anyone picked up the idea she's been killed.

It would have so easy if one of our contestants were either of my most-listened-to 89ers 'The Road To Hell' or 'Pop Said...', but at least I can just vote for the one that's obviously closer in tone 👍

Was never into the Cure, but I do stan All About Eve, so I guess that aligns a bit on genre. I liked Wave of Mutilation (was on one of the Rock Band games), and I've got Surfer Rosa on CD - somehow a lot more to my taste than this one.

I'm voting for Disintegration tho', partly because it sounded like an actual album: the songs feel like they're in an intentional order; consistent sound but tracks are distinct from each other; yes it's a bit dirgey, but they're all good dirges. No new faves either, but there might be on relisten.

Ok, listened through both, not done that before with either, in background while working.
Several tracks on Doolittle had me thinking "this must be great live", though they're fine as studio tracks. Consistent style, only sounded samey when I had to concentrate on work. No new faves from it.

He also went to prison for a couple of months in the late 90s after his behaviour on a flight to a member of the crew crossed several lines, but not sure if that information about his character got much airtime outside the NW of England

Think I'd have gone PB purely on balance of music, but here's what sealed it for the Boys: as soon as I saw the Like A Prayer cover I got a scent flashback to the perfume the cassette inlay card was impregnated with - that stuff lingered. Part of the album package, so I'm fine factoring it in!

Maybe slight 'biblically accurate' nerdiness here, but pretty sure that all the entities in the bible specifically called angels/malakim are human-passing (as the narrative demands), & the more monstery entities listed in Ezekiel with the many eyes and wings aren't described as angels, so I'm a No!

Manchester did something similar in 1971 to Sinclair's & the Wellington, jacking it up 5ft to the new street level. ...and moved it again after the bomb in '96, though that time they did the exact opposite of moving it in one piece (you may have Views on that approach)

Interestting framing, in that it just isn't the contrast it pretends to be: the Tories Get Things Wrong, while Labour Do Their Agenda without any moral flavour

I think you're bang on that they can't do that stuff, but they did also miss easy-to-copy stuff - e.g. when he talks to camera he's usually stationary, when he walks & talks that's with other people; or camera angle cuts but not him; yet they've just defaulted to this bog-standard frenetic thing

The absolute solidarity of the UK political establishment around City protectionism seems most loudly broadcast by the FTSE100 just rolling ever upwards for the last fee years while everyone agrees the economy has been doing nothing much of note or interest

Apparently indefensible for the National Trust too, since that overhead plan amounts to infiltration by English Heritage (or at least their logo)!

I've been assuming they also treat it as shorthand for "what if there's a nuke?" - which i think gets conflated with a WW because that's when one got used last time (and maybe for cold war / 'War Games' kiddoes because they've heard the phrase 'global thermonuclear war' a lot)
