I’m actually an immigrant and I agree that “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”
But when maps often literally leave New Zealand off the edge, and other countries are so quick to claim NZers, I want to proudly shout these great artists’ names from the rooftops

Kimbra has a voice to die for. She’s a lot more than “just” the featured singer on Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye.
Vows was released in 2011. The later, US version (2012) has a version of Nina Simone’s Plain Gold Ring which starts a capella.

Scott is a youthful polemicist here. He’s become jazzier and more self reflective since then. But this will be my number 1 for sure.

Hell yeah! I’d forgotten this. Broods sneaking in to this bracket from August 2014. If you get a Lorde feel that’s partly thanks to shared producer Joel Little. Rawe!

tbh I really only know the singles. But Youngblood got traction internationally and the album went straight to No. 1 in Aotearoa. Well worth a listen.

Blustering, loud Mayor Craig Jepson was yelling at him to sit down.
Cllr. Eryn Wilson-Collins has fought a lonely battle (alongside Cllr. Ihapera Paniora and, often, Cllr Mark Vincent) smiles at Mr Linnell 🧵

Hear me out…they were such a teen-pop band when they appeared. I was snobby about them. Have to admit now these’re some bangin tunes, well-played. And full of joy - which feels good these days

I once saw The Blue Nile’s album Hats in a remainder bin in Auckland for $3. I wanted to upend the table and curse these people for ignorance and complete absence of taste. But I just bought the CD to replace my cassette.
This is their debut of course, but every note’s a winner

More heartfelt than my lament for you”
As others have said, they got better. But what a debut!
