Highly recommend spending some time with this project by @adrianaheldiz.bsky.social who got incredible access to a preschool in San Diego that helps children caught in the crossfire of domestic violence go on to live healthy, normal lives.

State agencies don't use high risk automated systems, a state report claims, but legislative staff say it could cost billions of dollars for CA agencies to assess high risk AI they use or plan to use. A source told me those two things can't be true + somebody's lying calmatters.org/economy/tech...

I wrote a story about the slew of cuts to NIH's research grants for undergraduate students. These programs provided students stipends to basically not work and instead put in ~15 hours of work in labs to beef up their research experience so they can get into Ph.D. programs. Many campuses affected.
