This reminds me of Blake Lively's dress on a MET gala. Beautiful copper oxidation!

Mineral security shift
How focusing on human security, not just national security, shapes mineral policies.

Hey folks in Calgary! #YYC
Do you want to learn some cool facts about #Mars?
My friend and colleague Ben Tutolo from @ucalgaryscience.bsky.social will give a #TapTalk (aimed at a broad audience) this Thursday at Tool Shed Brewing. You can't miss it!

Just completed 2000Km on my e-bike, mostly commuting! 🚴‍♂️💪

2000Km in which I was not using unnecessary space on the roads or burning gas. I have ridden trough sun, rain and snow, from -30 to +30C.

Whish there were more (safe) bikelanes, though #yycbike

I was born and raised in Bogotá 🇨🇴, home now is Calgary 🇨🇦

I show these two graphs to my students to illustrate how global warming affects some regions more than others. Sadly, those most badly affected are the ones emitting less CO2.

When you are at a SciComm workshop, and one of the participants happens to be already an excellent communicator.
Thanks @watershedlab.bsky.social for explaining to us - and the rest of the community - the causes of the terrible landslide yesterday in Banff

Finished this puzzle by Rocky Mountain Creators. Not only is a photo of beautiful Moraine Lake, but did you notice the very Canadian shapes of the puzzle pieces? I’m obsessed!

One problem with #DeepSeaMining is that it distracts the conversation and efforts from improved land-based extraction and recycling—there are more resources than we think!

DSM risks & uncertainties are too high. We should not even be thinking about touching the seabed.

Loved this clip from the psychology majors working on coping with stress in earthquake-prone regions (btw, our lecture time was at midday)

Yesterday we had the final presentations of our Intro to Earth Sciences course for non-majors.
We had topics from the influence of geology on literature & languages to policy for climate change and hazard prevention, and even a mock panel on nuclear energy.
I think I learned as much as they did! ⚒️🍎

Heading to #EGU2025?
I'm convening the ERE4.2/GMPV6 session "Sourcing critical raw materials: Methods, challenges, and opportunities"
We have amazing talks and posters on exploration, processing, & mine waste management.
Hope to see you there! 🧪⚒️

Exactly one year ago, I came to Calgary for the first time; it was for a job interview. I was so awfully nervous that I went downtown for a stroll to calm down a bit and took this photo.
Spoiler alert: I got the job. I live now in Calgary, and I’m very happy!

Joining the Eclipse-versary! Last year, I was lucky to be in the path of totality for the solar eclipse in Kingston, ON. This is one of the most wonderful things I have ever witnessed 🥲 (yes, I cried!)

Scientists who are migrants in the US & from minoritized groups cancelling their participation in @egu.eu because they are afraid if they leave the country, they might not be able to go back (screenshot of a @geolatinas.bsky.social chat group; translation in the alt text)

I had the same profile photo since I opened my Twitter account... many years ago! It was time for a change

Can anyone remind me why the train crosses Calgary right in the middle of the city with barely any safe pedestrian/bike crossings? I’ve been waiting here longer than usual #yyc #yycbike

A friend included this anti-acknowledgement section on her PhD thesis. She also added the proposition: “Systematic bullying and undermining of girls and women in STEM starts early on and is the reason why they do not stay in science and related fields.”
Absurd we still need to go through this

Initially, the definition of #CriticalMinerals included only metals needed for green technologies, but in practice it also includes metals for "defence applications".

Not everyone interested on getting critcal minerals cares about a green economy.

#yycbike report. 12 Av from Sunalta heading downtown: some snow cover, nice and grippy. Bike lane moving way faster than the car lane.
