What’s also concerning is that even people who know a bit more about LLM’s often think that they only occasionally ‘hallucinate’, and don’t understand that it makes up everything, every time.

Indeed. Everyone knows this is coming, because it happens again and again. So it’s a conscious decision of all of them not to say anything. Despicable.

That’s why I don’t like the term ‘hallucinations’. The term seems to imply that hallucinations are the exception, as in normal perception, against a background of veridical observations.
But they are not. Everything an LLM generates is an ‘hallucination’. There is no ‘truthful’ background.

It has been pointed out to them so many times, in so many ways, by so many people, that I can no longer see this as a failure. They no longer get that benefit of the doubt. It is intentional.

I agree, but I would add that a main lesson is that Europe needs to get much, much better at capturing attention itself. It’s not enough to give measured responses and have a long term strategy.
A main part of the strategy should be: how do we control the narrative.
