#SFFChat Q4: Excerpt! This is the opening to chapter 10: First Flight.
Maira started as she was woken early the next morning. Ham clapped a hand on her shoulder and offered her a hot, black coffee. ‘Morning Captain!’ he said jovially. ‘Thought I’d wake you early – there’s a bunch of papers need signing already, and that’s not the half of it!’ ‘Geez, Ham, the sun’s not even risen!’ Maira groaned. She rubbed her eyes and looked around; she was still in the helm. ‘You let me sleep here all night?’ she asked. Ham shrugged. ‘I follow the captain’s orders, Captain,’ he said and flashed her a grin. ‘I’ll see you in your office in ten minutes.’ ‘Thirty,’ Maira argued. She got to her feet, feeling the tension in her muscles as she stretched. ‘I’m not signing anything until I’m changed.’ The light was barely creeping over the horizon, judging by the golden glow rising in the clouds, as Maira made her way over the short walkway to the captain’s quarters. As she did so, she happened to glance towards Bolthead. There were a dozen or more people at the gates of Ham’s yard, staring at the Fallen Star.

Then I can put off going until the Law Society dinner on Wednesday,’ he said, and chuckled. Maira chuckled too, then pulled a chair up and sat, suddenly serious. ‘Argyle,’ she said. ‘Who’s been through my bag while I’ve been gone?’ Argyle started. He took off his reading glasses and packed them away carefully. ‘I can tell you no one has looked in your bag while I have been in here,’ he said. Maira nodded, seemingly satisfied. As he clicked open his glasses case, she said, ‘and when did you leave the room whilst I was at the junkyard with Ham?’ The glasses case clicked closed. ‘Well I couldn’t say exactly what time-’ ‘Argyle.’ Maira leaned forward, folding her hands on the desk, ‘Between my leaving this room after the will reading, and my returning to it just now, how many times were you out of this room? And who was in the room on those occasions when you left?’ Argyle sweated like a guilty witness. He grimaced and groaned, and eventually said, ‘I was out of the room twice. Once was to go to the bathroom, and once was to fetch some paperwork your mother left in the office. Both times she was in the room when I left – the first time with some aunt or another, I don’t remember.’

And everyone is shocked by it, but it is making headlines. Even if you’re countering it, you’re repeating it.”

I've also been reading THE LIMITS TO GROWTH alongside it. I think this is the original version (it's a free ebook) from like the 70's, when a group of scientists called the Club of Rome set out to model humanity's impact on the planet using cutting edge computer simulation.

First up: I started reading The Democracy Project by David Graeber this week. It's a personal account of the Occupy movement by one of the founders, but it also delves into the history of anarchism and the shift in how democracy is viewed and understood.

‘One rule, Bard!’ he hissed urgently. ‘Don’t listen to the music! Don’t let it in! Just dig your patch and block it out.’ I stared back into those eyes, so filled with fear, and I wondered what could have engendered such emotion in Chief. And then I felt hands grasping my shoulders, and I was hauled to the bank in the arms of two guards. Two more joined them, and one of them socked me in the jaw as the other yelled, ‘What the Hell do you think you’re doing, prisoner?’ The guard drove a fist into my gut and I doubled over instinctively; before I could receive more punishment there was a cacophony of alarm and I was dropped unceremoniously into the snow once more.

With that crunch came sound: I realised that the background noise I had been ignoring was the creak and crack of the ice river as it froze and settled further down the path – where I could not say, for it all seemed to be frozen, up and down, but some force moved it and sent pings and cracks echoing and rippling across the soundscape. These were joined by the sounds of the trees – not the wind whistling through them, but the creak and groan as they turned to follow my progress, bending down to touch my shoulders and brush a branch across my face – and, when I turned suddenly to stare in horror and wonder at this action, twanging back into their straightened pillars of frozen wood. Each tree was covered by a thin rime of ice which crackled and whispered as it dusted me with frozen particulate upon their strange contortions. The journey – I followed the trail of the river, for it was the only thing in this landscape to follow – was thus scored by a thousand staccato rattles and pops, and I marched to the erratic snare of a haunted drummer.

There was no smell here, just the fresh cold of winter which burned my nostrils dry; I pulled my jumper over my nose and breathed through my mouth to restore some life into it, through what little warmth and moisture that provided. Here the very air seemed dead, sounds travelled infinitely and even the quietest tread of a creature in the underbrush sounded like a breath in my ear from some phantom just behind me.

He bowed low before sitting cross-legged on the floor. He took a stoppered bottle from his jacket and uncorked it, and where he poured it on the ground a campfire sprang up, flickering and crackling. I could feel the heat radiating from where I stood, and it warmed me through. ‘Take a seat,’ he said, gesturing across the fire. I hesitated, but my anxiety was giving way to nausea, and I had not been thinking on my lame leg and now it twinged with discomfort that would soon become pain. I eased myself down, the snow surprisingly soft and warm. It was like sitting in cotton wool, and with the heat of the fire I was soon comfortable. I looked across the flickering flames at my so-called captor, regarding him warily. He smiled a smile that showed too many teeth, and continued. ‘Please allow me to introduce myself,’ he said. ‘You can call me… Spider.’

We’d be woken before first light by the guards hammering on the door. They’d slam it open just to prove they could, and anyone not on their feet by the time they came in would get the butt of a rifle in their stomach. Then the Captain would enter and address us. ‘Get dressed, Camp F!’ he’d yell. ‘I want you ready and in your lines in five minutes!’ He and the guards would leave for five minutes so we could hurry to get dressed, and then we’d stand in two straight lines, bunkmates next to each other. Which meant I was always paired with Vulture. When the Captain ordered, ‘Move out!’, he’d shove me or yank the back of my collar so he got to leave ahead of me each time. We’d exit single-file, taking a turn past the cauldron for some scalding hot gruel in a tin cup, and they’d call out our names and tick us off as we stepped up into the back of the trucks to take us to the Bridge. It was pointless Vulture pulling me back every day, because they always called out my name before his.

The trees around me shivered, and from each of them I saw delicate silver lines lance above my head. They were strung around the forest in such a net that it was a wonder I was not covered in them – had my path been fatefully clairvoyant? Or was this a trap into which I had unwittingly blundered? No answer was easily forthcoming, but I found the lines led along a path which brought me into a clearing. I could see in there that the body stood, head lolling to one side, legs bent at awkward angles – this still was a corpse, then, and its movements truly those of a puppet. Well I was eager to meet this puppetmaster. I stepped into the clearing.

I heard from far behind me the sound of someone humming the song. My song. That did it. I turned: the rest of the prisoners were standing in a line, shovels at their feet – all except Quisling, who still clutched his as though it were a talisman against punishment; and Vulture, who was startled at this display and keeping his shovel between himself and his suddenly-suicidal bunkmates. The Captain shoved me aside and I fell onto my bad knee in the snow, grimacing in pain. He marched down the line, listening for the humming. I knew it had to be Chief – not only because I didn’t reckon the others would do something so recklessly suicidal for me, but also because he was the only one who’d have cause to remember the song. Or so I thought. As the Captain approached Chief at the end of the line, someone else struck up the tune; Ox, towards me, started humming it. The Captain started and turned, Chief forgotten; so this was the plan? I wondered what would happen when he found someone who <em>was</em> humming it.
