New book! “The Writer” by Josh Gad, the Berkowitz Bros, Ariel Olivetti and Frank Cvetkovic. A comic book about a Jewish comic book writer loaded with Jewish monsters and magic. It’s wild. I don’t love it, it’s a bit to chaotic for me. But it’s fun and with checking out.

New book! Josephson-Storm’s “The Myth of Disenchantment: Magic Modernity, and the Birth of the Human Sciences.” It focuses on western philosophy with passing reference to Kabbalah. It’ll be a great companion for Gideon Bohak’s article “How Jewish Magic Survived the Disenchantment of the World”

I love this illustration by Yosl Kottler. Looking for inspiration for my “Water Shedim” card and found Kottler, who was a Yiddish speaking Jewish American poet, artist, puppeteer and composer at the beginning of the 1900’s

Fascinating 1891 anthropological description of Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews in Turkey. Very judgmental at times, but paints a fascinating picture. I originally ran across it looking at Jewish burial practices, like this one....

One of my buddies took a cool shot of me telling stories at Temple Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor. Very dramatic. Lol. And yeah, I’m sporting a Marti Fuerst giant frog shirt. 🤩🐸

Guess who guested on the latest @pjlibrary.org "Beyond the Bookcase" podcast? :)

"We had a chat with a real-life monster expert! Join Golem and producer Ali as they sit down with Jack Zaientz from JewishMonsterHunting.com"

It was super fun. Check it out wherever you get your podcasts.

If you're local to Southeast Michigan, come to my Jewish monsters story telling at Temple Beth Emeth on Nov 1. I'll be telling stories supported by other storytellers from the congregation. Last year was a blast.

Hey Chabad folks, anyone have any connection to the “Lubavitch Archive” referred to in this photo of Rabbi Menachem Tzvi Rivkin? I’d like talk to them about permission to use the photo in a trading card that tells the story of his earring.

G'mar chatima tovah!

Kapparot is a Yom Kippur atonement ritual where a chicken is passed over one’s head three times while reciting the appropriate text. The chicken (or it's value in $) is later donated to charity.

Lithography from Yeshiva University Museum. Late 19th / early 20th century

"The illustration is of the angel of death, flanked by a skull and an hourglass. The large, decorated Hebrew letters state: "The end of man is to die"

The illustration is done using micrography, e.g. depicting lines using small Hebrew characters. (1/2)

Love this.
Found it in Harold Schwartz collection “Gates to the New City: A Treasury of Modern Jewish Tales”. I think it’s from Langer’s 1937 book “9 Gates to the Chasidic Mysteries”

Memunim are angels, "celestial deputies" "Houses and cities, winds and seasons, months and hours and days, each star above, each speck of dust underfoot, no thing in nature or in fancy exists independently of its memuneh, its heavenly "deputy" (Check out the cute memunim stickers by @devotaj.com )

More Talmud trash talk!

In Genesis Rabbah, the angels get feisty and argue over whether or not humankind should be created … because they know we're going to suck.

God's clap back is epic.

So, how come our spines becoming snakes? According to the Tosafot (medieval commentators) it is connected to the Luz bone, at the base of the spine, which is the key to physical reincarnation. Turning the Luz into a snake destroys the bone & bang! no more reincarnation. yeah, that made it more weird

Satan, in Ashkenazi Jewish stories, sometimes shows up in the form of a black dog (as he does in other folklores.) In one Baal Shem Tov story, he shows up as black dog in court to inform against a villager. Satan was scolded, "as one scolds a dog" and he ran away.
