1. Jerry Falwell floats the idea that separation of church and state wasn't a good idea. Americans agree.
2. Forms Moral Majority.
3. Gets Reagan elected.
4. Dissolves Moral Majority because it was no longer needed.

Americans love covering for Evangelicals.

Nobody:

Kant: Raised deeply religious, super weird ideas about how sex for pleasure is inherently cannibalistic. Concludes homosexuality is immoral because it can only be for pleasure.

Descartes: Perception is subjective. Reality is in the mind.

Hume: Perception is subjective. Emprical experiences shape our intuition about reality.

Kant: Perception is subjective. There can't be emprical experiences without intuition.

That writeup does seem to really focus on communication tbh, and in turn frames cognition as a means of enabling social interaction. Do you really think this framing extends to, I dunno, tool use/manufacture (beyond motivation or things like memory reinforcement).
June 28, 2025 at 10:29 PM
Oh wow, that's a bold claim. The current thinking on how emotions contextualize an experience is a) is it new, b) does it help/hurt our goals, c) does it conform to our values, d) do we have agency (this holds across cultures). Are you perhaps thinking more about communication than cognition?

My point was more that you don't need to posit sexism to explain why people aren't keen on trying to build a machine that can scream while it helplessly carries out our orders.
June 27, 2025 at 10:58 PM
Real "we built the torment nexus" take you have there tbh

What happened when Prague's golem fell in love? Why didn't Frankenstein make his Adam an Eve? "Emotional automatons are creepy" has been the vibe for centuries.

Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay
To mould Me man? Did I solicit thee
From darkness to promote me?

Anyways, I don't really see the logic in giving Iceland a socialist scout badge (laudatory) for fucking up their banking system in the most stereotypically capitalist way possible, and fucking it up so badly that it was literally impossible for them to bail out their banks.
June 27, 2025 at 8:12 PM
They didn't have a choice lol. Their banks (freshly deregulated) had run up debts to something like 10x Iceland's GDP. They had already hit a bit of a liquidity crisis, then BAM.

Canada was about as exposed as can be to U.S. housing, but they didn't deregulate. No bank failures, no bailouts.

I dunno, I've done a fair bit of training on how to get useful info from them, but IME they just fail miserably on anything non-trivial. One exception is web layouts + css, but that's likely because not only am I bad at FE, but also have the aesthetic tastes of an elderly DB admin.

I kinda disagree with the better than SO comment. A few reasons:

1) The dates of the question and the answers provide a ton of context.
2) If the question hasn't been asked, SO won't generate a page to answer.
3) Scanning through SO pages is faster than rephrasing LLM prompts.

The difference is that execs view employees as liabilities, and gen AI hype is about a world where they can e.g., lay off those pesky, costly devs who get in the way of thought leadership with comments about cost, time, and feasibility. Feudal lords who no longer need blacksmiths to obtain power.

Caveat about the LSD auditory hallucinations: they were more like synesthesia. I don't think that's how schizophrenics experience auditory hallucinations.
June 27, 2025 at 1:55 PM
I know very little about the science behind all this, but my tendency is towards suspicion as well. The author is giving off 'drug evangelical' (my kind of people back in the day) and I'm extremely familiar with how certain psychedelics give the illusion of understanding.
June 27, 2025 at 1:53 PM
Anecdotally, I've definitely experienced auditory hallucinations while on extremely high doses of LSD (~30-50 tabs). The RCs hit most of the rest - again, at very high doses, but particularly when ignoring set/setting (e.g., lack of sleep, coming down off a coke binge etc).

Screw that, new medieval dancing plague theory just dropped (poop in the Rhine).

The dude linked to PiHKAL and TiHKAL, haha. If he hasn't tried at least some of the 2Cs (which can be pretty speedy ime), he definitely knows the shibboleths.
June 26, 2025 at 9:23 PM
Yes, lol. I was really confused by this question/woke rebrand framing until I saw "Indian sitting" elsewhere in the thread - I guess that's an American thing?

I always knew it as "cross-legged", but I've also heard "tailor sit". Apparently "Turkish sit" is a thing as well.

I'm not American, but I am old enough to have been "around and aware" when the Islamic world signed their own declaration of human rights (and yes, also when your country went completely insane a little later). You might find it instructive to see which rights are incompatible with their beliefs.
June 26, 2025 at 8:15 PM
That's the pushback here? What a stupid conversation.
June 26, 2025 at 5:25 PM
I feel like I've been pretty clear about my position of "theocracy bad", so I'm very confused why you are asking me if I think that the country that habitually kills and imprisons people to enforce homogeneity of religious beliefs is oppressive. Of course it's oppressive, what an odd thing to say.
June 26, 2025 at 5:00 PM
Aren't you splitting hairs a little here? If the misogyny is an article of rite, faith, and practice then it's somewhat disingenuous to say that the rite/faith/practice isn't inherently problematic.

Islam is certainly not unique - these comments apply equally to American theocratic fundies.
June 26, 2025 at 2:35 PM
Equitability, like tolerance, is a social contract. If your ideology actively creates/enforces power imbalances, then the protections of that social contract no longer apply.

I understand giving people space for spirituality, but "I'm a misogynist for religious reasons" is not valid, I'm sorry.

The second quote is a facetious representation of the other argument.
