And fun fact: in 1837, there was a riot in Washington DC called the “Know Nothings” riot. It was an anti-immigration protest, full of xenophobia and bigotry. The irony? Those calling people “woke” today are channelling that energy. History really does rhyme. (Photo cred: me😎) 6/
Text from an exhibit titled 'The Know-Nothing Riot, 1857.' It describes the Mount Vernon Square neighborhood in Washington, DC, becoming a working-class area by the 1840s. A decade later, during a wave of European immigration, native-born white Americans formed the secretive 'Know-Nothings,' a political party opposing immigrants and Roman Catholics. In 1857, Washington Know-Nothings, with the help of the 'Plug-Uglies' gang from Baltimore, disrupted a city election. The mob attacked the Northern Liberty Market polling station to drive away voters. President Buchanan sent in two companies of Marines to restore order, resulting in a clash that left six dead and 21 wounded. Afterward, the polls reopened, and the Know-Nothing candidate was defeated. Reproduction credit: Library of Congress.
