While Lulu’s last name makes an explicit reference to her long tail, Maya’s borrows from a niche Bosnian colloquialism ‘damlajisan’ (adj), stemming from the Ottoman medical term damla (i.e., paralysis). However, in Bosnian vernacular adaptation, the term describes a state of euphoric blacking out. 😵‍💫

Don’t make it easy for these assholes to patrol your city. As the article says: If you witness someone being arrested, ask for their name and if there’s someone you can call for them. Also, alerting someone of possible arrests is protected speech under the First Amendment. Carry a whistle with you.

But the local level is where they can build political capital, through governance that’s tangible and empathetic. It’ll be interesting to watch what progressive leadership in these major urban centers can accomplish, and what new models of leftist grassroots politics they might propel nationally.

Establishment politics—whether from the right or the center—dominate the symbolic and emotional bandwidth of American politics. MAGA is an extreme example of this: a supercharged media machine of shock and awe built to capitalize on the attention economy. That’s a tough battlefield for progressives.

Had to look up sewer socialism —interesting! These mayoral wins aren’t just about policy changes. They remind us what’s possible on the ground. MAGA currently dominates the symbolic (and emotional) circuits of American life; it’s a continuous media machine — spectacle is what keeps it running..
