Western Balkans, EU, human rights, democracy & rule of law. Bridging the Western Balkans-EU gap.
Washington now wants to achieve these goals in other ways [while keeping the OHR as a very last-resort mechanism].

The 🇪🇺? Its messages remain confusing.

The 🇺🇸 message today: it has no interest in using the #OHR and the #BonnPowers as a key tool to pursue or protect its goals in 🇧🇦. Those stated goals are a peaceful, stable, and territorially intact country with which it can cooperate – above all on economic issues.

In March, 🇧🇦 was on the brink of an armed clash between different police forces. Since then – with 🇺🇸 leadership and support – the situation has been contained and stabilised.

V zadnjih 25 letih smo doživeli veliko epizod, ko smo imeli politike, ki so res želeli delati na procesu širitve, doseženi so bili rezultati, a te reforme niso vodile k zaključku širitvenega procesa, zato se sile, ki želijo reforme in širitev EU, šibijo.

Everything else – whether time- or event-based derogations – matters less.

Yesterday in #Ljubljana, I had the pleasure of welcoming 🇸🇮 members of the European Parliament to my #Berlin home.

It was a great and much-needed discussion.

In my view, as part of this debate, full integration into the #SingleMarket, access to #funds comparable to those received by earlier entrants, and a clear perspective of swift accession to the #Schengen area should be non-negotiable.

The latter would irreparably damage the 🇪🇺’s credibility in the Western #Balkans and, as importantly, shake the confidence of 🇺🇦’s fighters and 🇲🇩’s reformers.

As (hopefully) member states engage in serious introspection, new ideas will emerge. In the end, there will either be a typically European Union compromise – or no agreement at all.

In recent weeks, much has been said about the veto rights of future members. Some have argued for time-limited derogations, others for event-based ones – lasting until the 🇪🇺 reforms itself. This is likely only the beginning of the discussion.

The accession negotiations framework … provides the best tool to help the country build more functional democratic institutions, enabling it to succeed and rightfully take its place in the 🇪🇺.”

Fully agree!

The EU is preparing to accept new members. The Country Report is BiH’s guide to get over the finish line.

Adding that:

“One of the reasons we are so eager to formally launch the accession negotiations is that this offers an opportunity to discuss 🇧🇦’s governance structures in a comprehensive and structured way, with greater support from the broad expertise within the European Commission.

Alongside the assessments of preparedness, the most interesting will be the #Commission’s view on the feasibility of #target #dates to conclude accession negotiations.
