I'm so sorry to share that Friedemann Pulvermüller, brilliant neuroscientist, has passed. He gave Embodiment ideas legs and worked tirelessly on treatments for stroke victims during his storied career. His kindness and wry humor made him sparkle.

LLM finds it FAR easier to distinguish b/w DO & PO constructions when the lexical & info structure of instances conform more closely w/ the respective constructions (left 👇). Where's pure syntax? LLM seems to say "🤷♀️" (right) @SRakshit

GPT-4 behaves just like people on a complex set of 'island' stimuli:
Backgroundedness jdgmts on base sentences predict independent acceptability jdgmts on Qs & RCs but not jdgmts on the base sentences themselves
Causal manipulation works too

I don't love the term 'innate' (or 'instinct') cause it begs the question of how it evolved phylogenetically and how it develops ontogenetically (from conception onwards).
Saying 'it's innate" is just a place holder for a more satisfying explanation. See:

I think I should have included this for context: the question is whether we need stipulations about universal syntax or instead, certain social and cognitive prerequisites

Seeking advice: in a general piece about Language, should this speculative explanation as to why the Universal Grammar Hypothesis has had such legs stay or be cut?

why should the bad guys be the only ones with generally recognized hand gestures?
Can we create to way to express 'can I help?' or just quiet solidarity ('I agree that's a nutcase')
None of these quite work
