@reaper-man.bsky.social hello! I was just discussing w some friends the ideal cast for an Apple TV version of the discworld city watch series, and I reckon you have some great picks/ideas. Would love your thoughts/suggestions/replacements.
Here is what we have:

Crazy train was one of the first songs I listened to on repeat as a teenager. First it was the heavy guitar riffs... Then over the years it was the lyrics... Its still the lyrics and the music today. The rock world has lost one of its giants...

I have no horse in this race, but I am extraordinarily excited about the possibility of Pope Pizzaballa!

The longer I am on here, the more i wonder how much @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social contributes to Portland's reputation for the bizarre... Is it like osmosis? Or ergo hoc propter hoc? I enjoy it at any rate

Can anyone recommend an English-language text on the origins of Ottoman sea power?

Its always worrisome when billionaires promise to look out for the "workers". The very workers whose exploitation catapulted these billionaires to their ungodly wealth...

While by far not my favourite core dystopian fiction book, the principle of Doublethink/Doublespeak from 1984 has never been more relevant than now.
Allies are enemies.
Tariffs are bonus money.
Cutting govt programs/staff will not affect govt services.

🤦

I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about economics... But even I know what a tariff is and have a basic understanding of how they work.
I dread to think what effect this will have on an economy that is dependent on imports after decades of outsourcing production and manufacturing.

It is wild to me, that wanting a government to fulfil the basic parts of the social contract (healthcare, infrastructure, etc) is considered a "political" or "partisan" position in some places...

@smartreads.bsky.social So, where do you recommend one starts in reading your work? I read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, but am always keen to broaden my horizons

I've been thinking a lot about the struggle for ideological purity and the fractious nature of the left as discussed by @danielsloss.bsky.social I think the problem is that various aspects or actions are seen as a litmus test. Perhaps instead they should be steps you can take, not proof of entry.

Looking at the state of things in the US I am regularly reminded that change does not equal progress...

@midnightburger.bsky.social continues to knock it out of the park. It is clever, witty, well written, and profound. Midnight Burger is one part Hitchhikers Guide, one part Doctor Who, a dash of Nightvale weird, seasoned with Pratchett-esque irreverence for the mundane. Tell everyone!

I think, in light of events in the US, one of the most important things is going to be showing some grace to anyone that is now realising they were lied to. It takes a lot as an adult to admit you are wrong (though it shouldn't), and even more to re-evaluate a position you have held for a long time.

Right then, I came here because twitter was getting palpably worse by the day. I hope this is a better platform and I am going to try to engage with it honestly in the hopes it's the kind of platform twitter was 10 years ago. A forum of ideas, a place to discuss and debate
