An site photograph from an archaeological excavation. There are multiple archaeological features and a red and white, 1m long ranging pole. On the foreground is a rough cobbled surface leading to a triangular shaped stone drain. On the other side of the stone drain is the statue of a lion, facing away. Only the delicately carved mane and the top of the head are visible. There is a curving retaining wall in the background, beyond the statue of the lion. The excavation are through brown silt, some of it still visible on the border of the photographs. The sandstone of the wall is light grey while the stone of the drain and the cobble are reddish-dark brown as they are still damp, having been freshly excavated. The lion has been carved in a blonde - pale brown sandstone.

Join us tonight at 6.45pm at the Old Library in #Kirkwall for an evening to Save the Hall of Clestrain! Archaeology with Tom Addyman, fundraising auction led by local legend John Copland, music, scran and a few drams thanks to Highland Park and Orkney Brewery.
Everybody welcome!
The Hall of Clestrain on a bright and sunny day. The hall is two storeys high. The main entrance is on the first floor and accessed through a flight of stairs leading to a red door. The door is flanked on either side by two large windows. The building is surrounded by a moat-like drain and is lower than the surrounding ground level. The Hall is in a state of disrepair and has seen better days. Green moss is growing on the masonry and on the roof, most window panes are broken or missing. The masonry is slumping in some places. Around the structure lush and deep green grass are gently sloping down to the dark blue sea. Tom Addyman is standing inside the Hall of Clestrain. The walls are in a poor state and covered in dark green algae. The light is filtering from a window in the back right of the image. Tom has his opened hand towards the window as he is talking about it, facing the camera. Behind him is a blocked fireplace with a surround painted orange. On either side of the fireplace are two recesses. The ceiling joists are visible as the plaster ceiling fell. The timber floor is patched and repaired. A view inside the Hall of Clestrain. The light is filtering through two windows on the right side. This is the main entrance hall of the house. The walls are in a poor state and overgrown in dark green algae. To the back of the hall is a stair leading to the floor above and to the floor below. The ceiling joists are visible as the ceiling plaster fell. The partition walls are partially demolished. The timber floor is patched in places.

Join the John Rae Society as they launch their urgent £1.6m fundraising campaign to Save Hall of Clestrain at 6.45pm on Monday, December 16 at The Old Library in #Kirkwall.
The Society's been working with Simpson & Brown and HES

Looking down the ruins of a stair tower. Light is coming from an open door at the bottom. Excavation revealed the make-up of the base of the tower. The walls are of bare stone and creating a semicircular tower. Some large cracks in the masonry let some more light in. Some projections on the walls are the remnant of the steps, long collapsed.
