I watched LoTR get it's turn with trillion dollar budgets and its fandom seems more than happy. I just feel cheated Dune didn't get its proper franchise. We got funny stilgar instead.

I think that's the problem: I can't see it that way, have too much respect for the canon to see it go Alien-like, which was just a movie made into a A-verse hence can be open to all sorts of variation, why not. Herbert's Dune already has canon enough for lifetimes.

And the show is just the money machine doing it's thing, I don't believe it has anything to do with Villeneuve's side of things. It won't even see a second season.

I still believe syfy did the best effort with the least budget in terms of adaptation, so the issue is not really budget. art and scale wise Villeneuve was perfect but a comedic fanatic Stilgar? a bitter wife of a Chani? And they made so little effort with the agony(s), Paul's transformation etc.
