Non-native Edinburgher. Here for the history.
Every hour today. It’s still cold and they are still not going out. It’s not getting any milder and those bladders will need emptied eventually.

Posting a photo on X of the surrender of U-2326 reminded me that two of my favourite photos from the Second World War were taken in Dundee and put the Master Race in their rightful place.

You would have thought a U-boat officer would know to duck. It gave the Dutch sailor on the left a laugh.

Looks like the area around the Cenotaph in Glasgow was respected during the rally in George Sq. today.
Odd location for the platform given the stooshie about the Cenotaph in Whitehall the other day.

Doesn’t look like Graeme Wood has made it over here yet but he’s Tweeted a splendid Radio Times cover from 1967.

Looks like a knocked out Vickers light tank behind Monty. Were we still using them at El Alamein in 1942?

I don’t know what the artist of the latest iteration of the Camp Coffee label thought was at the Highlanders’ feet but it no longer resembles his feather bonnet. I’m stumped to think what they thought they were illustrating. Why not just take it away like the sword?

Just noticed Ike’s chief of staff, Lt Gen Walter Bedell Smith, on the right in back row, is wearing a Sam Browne belt in this Overlord planning photo taken Feb 1944. I thought the US Army had ditched it not long after their entry into the war.

Wonder what Monty has just said to get those reactions?

Everyone has heard of Operation Dynamo. Some have heard of Admiral Ramsay but few will recognise the name of William James.
As CinC Portsmouth, based in HMS Victory, he organised Operations Cycle then Aerial to lift Allied troops from Channel ports in Normandy and Brittany in June 1940.

Not surprising the architect responsible for the Menin Gate memorial was a dab hand as an illustrator.
Here’s Sir Reginald’s illustration of the walls of the arsenal bastion at Gravelines from his book on Vauban.
In 1940 the French put 75mm guns on the bastion which commanded 2 bridges into the town

Just been reading about the 51st (Highland) Division at Dunkirk.

Trying to capture it in 1944. Here’s a photo of one of them , probably Argylls, escorting a civilian out of the German festung during a truce.

This has been popular today on Ex after replying to a Highlands & Islands voices Tweet with a photograph of St Columba’s in Brora.

Was looking for info about an aircraft that my wife’s aunt saw come down in Lanarkshire during WW2 but she couldn’t remember much about it. Found this very useful and pretty comprehensive list of aircraft crashes in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man

For anyone listening to podcasts with James Holland plugging his new book on 1944 Italy then this exaggerated relief map from @simongerman600.bsky.social , posted in the other place, is very useful in highlighting the flat plain around Foggia used for airfields (circled red)and Salerno (green)

Looking through some images for the profile on here and came across this magnificent colour photograph from WW2. I had cropped it from a French magazine which had decided to use it for an article about Jour J
