In our Writing + AI workshops, I've mentioned that some research (arxiv.org/abs/2304.02819) has shown that AI detectors are biased against non-native English speakers. Reading more research today that this may not be the case: sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Adding layers to writing (reflection, self-assessment, etc.) is critical. I heard it described (by Phillip Dawson & Kiata Rundle) as "The Swiss Cheese Model." Any one layer of AI plagiarism prevention will have holes, but if we stack layers, we can cover the holes. Here's a slide from our workshop:

Appreciate the AI Snake Oil blog. Great info on where AI is at technically. Their article on AI progress slowing down is worth your time (www.aisnakeoil.com/p/is-ai-prog...). Especially loved this discussion on whether AI developers are trustworthy sources on AI progress (spoiler, they're not):

At @myshortanswer.bsky.social, we prefer comparative judgment (CJ) over rubrics for #K12Writing instruction. In this post, we explain why we think comparative judgment helps students better see "the forest from the trees" AND "the trees from the forest": myshortanswer.com/we-dont-give...

Reminds me of Kluger and DeNisi’s 1996 historical review. If you’re reviewing feedback research, check it out. They review every piece of research on feedback from 1905 to 1996 (!!) and find that 2/5ths of the studies show feedback actually HURTING learning because of how students react to feedback

We don't give students rubrics in @myshortanswer. Why is that? With the help of research and analysis from @greg_ashman & @dylanwiliam, I explain why we feel comparative judgment is a more effective way to develop students' writing abilities #edusky : myshortanswer.com/we-dont-give...
