Cubs previously held a $6M club option with $750K buyout. This overrides that deal and gives Rea a slight bump while giving Cubs another year of control.

Still no reason to exercise the player option. Open market provides leverage in extension talks. Maybe it’s a show of good faith, but I don’t see why you exercise the player option under any circumstance. (Again, unless you’re injured — which hopefully is not the case here)

Would’ve been equally astonishing. This leaving minimum 60 and upwards of 100 million on the table.

Can ring chase at a discount that’s at least in the same stratosphere as market value.
All the respect in the world if he just loves Toronto, thinks they’re close and wants them to have more cash to keep Bo, sign free agents, etc.

Really though, given the obsession today’s teams have with waiting until the final seconds leading into any deadline, I’m pleasantly surprised there’s been a handful of real trades
